Nanking (DVD)

A look at the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China during World War II, and the efforts of a group of Westerners who helped over 200,000 Chinese find refuge in a safety zone, told through interviews with survivors, letters, readings, and more.

Rick Geary

The Borden Tragedy

As in his Jack the Ripper, Geary uses a fictional narrator to present a stylish, painstakingly researched treatment of the gruesome 1892 ax-murders of Abby and Andrew Borden in Falls River, Mass., and of the investigation, trial, and public and media spectacle that followed. The unsolved Borden murders have passed into folklore ("Lizzie Borden took an ax, gave her mother forty whacks") and the question of Lizzie's guilt (she was acquitted but remained under suspicion for the rest of her life) remains unanswered in Geary's book.

Yoko Writes Her Name

Having overcome the challenges of being the only sushi lover at the Hill Top School, the Japanese kindergartner faces a similar struggle when she is asked to write her name and produces it in beautiful Japanese calligraphy. Although the ever-sympathetic teacher, Mrs. Jenkins, praises Yoko's work, she can't change human nature and soon the class gossipmongers bruit it about that Yoko is "only scribbling" and won't be graduating to first grade.
